Spring Clean Your Digital SLR Camera

Whatever the season, you’ll find after repeated usage your SLR camera needs a bit of a touch up. There are a few techniques you can use to get the most out of your camera in between services or when it has been through quite a work out.

Firstly the sensor could do with a clean. You need to be extremely careful when you do this and if you’re not confident then you may be better off taking it to be done professionally. When you see dots in your images that are in the same place every time, or smudges and other markings, you need to first check and clean your lenses, using professionally made products designed specifically for this purpose and a lint free, microfiber cloth.

If this doesn’t help then your sensor is dirty and probably has some dust on it. If you’ve got an inbuilt cleaning system you should run this first. Then test your camera by shooting a plain background and setting the aperture very low.

It’s preferable to take the camera to a store and have it professionally cleaned but if you look around there are methods and products designed for cleaning up your digital SLR camera yourself. If this is fine, then it’s time for lenses. If you’ve done the step above and cleaned the obvious parts of lenses check the threading and make sure nothing is stuck in there that may be coming out onto the back of the lens when you attach it to your camera body.

Make sure you remove all of the filters and any attachments you may currently have on your lenses before you clean them, and be sure to pay every single piece some attention, otherwise the problem may not resolve. It’s very important to take very tender care of your camera and equipment but there are times, especially with high level use, that things do get dirty, so putting a bit of time into careful cleaning is highly recommended.
