There are a few new products hitting stores in time for Christmas this year, and if you’re looking for a decent entry level digital SLR camera as a gift for a loved one then there are some new models ready to be considered.
The main release is the Nikon. They are replacing the current entry level model, and bringing the D3000 to stores. This camera brings the best features of the original lower end cameras available with it, as well as adding some extra bonuses.
One key change is the megapixels which have been increased almost double, going from the old 6MP up to 10MP. While this is not necessarily a functional addition as most people will not need the whole 10, it’ll make consumers feel more comfortable with the product as megapixel count increases regularly.
Ready to compete with this camera is the Canon Rebel XSi. This camera is known as the 350D outside the U.S. and is remarkably good quality. Generally however it will come down to preference.
There are people in both camps and this is an age old war between stalwarts of the SLR industry. Some people prefer the Nikon which is traditionally a professional company, and believe it offers higher standards, however Canon has established itself well amongst consumer enthusiasts and is keen to hold onto this market.
If you want to have video functionality then you need to avoid both of these cameras and look at options like the Canon T1i. It is a more expensive option however but because this major feature is not included in the two above, even though this is newer it is not a fair competitor to the Nikon.
At entry level you can’t go past either of these two camera options and both will be a fantastic gift this Christmas, and sure to impress the beginner SLR user.
