Why Buy Olympus for Digital SLR?Digital SLR Reviews?

Olympus may not be the first name that comes to mind when considering digital SLR cameras. However they have in fact been quietly bringing innovative new technology into the marketplace. They just don’t tend to be as vocal about it as the main competitors Nikon and Canon.

Olympus led the charge bringing a few firsts to the industry. The first was the 4/3 format. This involves the lenses and censor.

It has revolutionized the lens market – this little change means that you can access the range of lenses provided by any other manufacturer who uses this format, effectively giving you endless options when it comes to choosing lenses and accessories for your camera. They are also smaller which means that you can transport them easier, and they have the ability to be much quieter than other lenses.

There are negative aspects to using this system and they should be considered before you go ahead and purchase an Olympus digital SLR. Because the 4/3 format is reasonably recent anything that you may have had from a film SLR may not be compatible and this means you’ll lose the range of lenses you could already own. Also based on their recent creation the range is not as large as other camera manufacturers at this stage.

While this is bound to change in future it is something to consider. The other risk that you run when looking at this technology, is that other manufacturers may decide not to incorporate the format into their range. As a result you’ll be just as limited as you are with any other brand, except that you also won’t be able to use old Olympus lenses.

Making a decision on whether or not the Olympus is suitable for you is a personal choice, but there are definitely things to keep in mind when you look at your options.
