Candle Light – Photography Options:Digital Camera Tutorials
If you like to photograph the ambience of candles or in candle light there are some quick tips you can use to get the most out of what is a notorious low light environment. Make the most of this romantic and idyllic imagery by sticking to some basic guidelines. Firstly, make sure your using a basic design for your frame.
Don’t make the image too complicated and focus on simple and clean. Keeping things plain will let you get the most from the candle itself and give you a great photograph that will be emotive and focused on the subject matter. If it’s only a part of your total photograph then try to use the light for shadow creation.
It’ll let you get more than average from your images and you’ll be happy with the feeling portrayed. Try doing the photos at night. It might seem simple but it’s often a fact forgotten by photographers. Don’t let the natural or indoor lighting ruin the image you want to create.
It is better to have night than to create it in post production as it’ll add more depth to the flame. Also with regard to light, don’t forget to alter the white balance settings in your camera. Perhaps take a test shot and then aim for a warm setting that will let your light shine through as you intended, without the correction to make it cool.
Play around with exposure also. If you blow out the flame then you’ve got nothing to work with in post production and it’ll look amateur. You need to keep the detail and depth of the flame in the image so be careful not to over expose it.
Finally, make sure you’re in the right position. If you’re too far away your candle won’t add anything to the image. If you’re too close you will blow out the image.
Find a distance that captures exactly what you want to portray and practice before deciding on the ultimate shot.
