While you may find the prospect daunting, it is possible to do self-cleaning at home without sending your camera away for proper servicing. If you’ve noticed that there are issues with the quality of your images or it seems something has wedged onto your sensor leaving you with spots in your photos then it might be worth considering doing the cleaning yourself – especially if you’ve only recently serviced your camera. While some newer models have included a sensor cleaning process, if you don’t have this then you will find from time to time your sensor needs a clean.

Make sure you’ve got all of the correct equipment – compromising here could lead to problems. By using the right tools you can access the internal areas of your camera without damaging it. If you’re able to confidently master this then you can feel safer taking your camera into less ideal environmental conditions, and instead take care of any problems you may have with sensor dust yourself.

You need to approach this knowing that your sensor is the be all and end all of your camera. Without it, your expensive equipment will be useless so take proper care and show caution whenever you are attempting to clean or view it.

Firstly you’ll need the tools to operate the cleaning process properly. You’ll need a blower designed specifically for the job, some sensor cleaning cloths and solution. It is always best to use products made for this purpose because there is less chance of having any problems.

You have to check that your sensor actually needs cleaning and the fault does not lay with lenses or other accessories. This is important because you want to touch that sensor as little as is practically possible. Take an image of a plain white background and see if there are marks that are not lens based.

By using Photoshop or similar you can play with the contrast of your image in larger size so you can see if there are any minor problems too. Only if you find these should you clean your sensor.
