Sony has released a new range of SLR cameras into the market and is aiming for both hobbyists and advanced enthusiasts or professionals. Having entered the market later than many other brands, Sony comes with the backing of years of research and camera production after buying out Konica Minolta.
The three cameras available range in feature and price, as well as resolution provided for images. The baby of the range is the 12MP DSLR A500 model which retails for approximately $850 with an included standard lens. The middle child is the 14MP DSLR A550, at around $200 more.
Finally they offer the massive 24.6MP DSLR A850, which is double the price of the previous version and does not include any lenses. Already Sony now has six cameras available in this market and they do aim to take over 25% of current market share. They are trying hard, having added a new lens to their range which now gives the photographer 30 to choose from within the Sony brand.
The enthusiast based cameras now carry a higher ISO than ever before, with better quality images produced with reduced noise and blurring. They also have a HDR feature – this means that they are faster shooters than previous models. Finally these two cameras have larger screens included and better quality than older models – which aren’t all that old.
The screens also move which gives you greater functionality and viewing at odd angles
Sony’s new cameras are a great addition to the market and they are sure to give older companies a shakeup in their pricing and feature structure. It’s very possible that Sony could achieve their goal in market share with the release of more models and lenses to come. As the newest player there is a lot of ground to cover, but these new cameras definitely offer the user something a little different to what is already available.
